The area around Emerald, Rubyvale, Sapphire, and Anakie is definitely gemstone country. This sapphire mine is at Rubyvale, where for a small fee, one can take a guided tour underground. These are the drilling marks that hopefully for the driller produced a sapphire at the end of the hole.
